Welcome to Fort Stewart, GA

Housing, Business, Community, and Relocation Information.

Fort Stewart is the Army’s largest armor training base on the East Coast. It is home to the 3rd Infantry Division and subordinate units such as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Teams, the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, and the Division Artillery. The fort is located in Hinesville, Georgia.

History

Camp Stewart was established in 1940 when the U.S. was on the verge of entering World War II. Due to shortages, it did not immediately have the proper equipment and supplies, but started the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Training Center anyway. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, supplies for the camp materialized and Stewart came alive as an artillery center and Women’s AF Service Pilots (WASP) live-fire target towing center.

Camp Stewart was again very active during the Korean War and even hosted the 1st Armored Division on stand-by in case the Cuban Missile Crisis was not settled. Hunter Army Airfield, taken over from the Air Force, became a helicopter pilot training site in 1967, bringing aviation to the camp for the first time. Today, Fort Stewart remains the East Coast’s strongest power projection platform.
