Welcome to MacDill AFB, FL

Housing, Business, Community, and Relocation Information.

MacDill Air Force Base is in Tampa, Florida, under Air Mobility Command. The host unit is the 6th Air Mobility Wing which provides mission support to more than 3,000 military personnel. Other units located at MacDill include the 927th Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command.

Originally known as Southeast Air Base, Tampa, MacDill was one of two Army Air Corps bases built in the area in 1939. MacDill headquartered the Southeast Air District (later the Third Air Force) and the III Bomber Command. Early on, during World War II, MacDill's mission was to fly antisubmarine patrols for Nazi U-boats and provide protection for aircraft going to the South Atlantic Ocean and the Philippines, known as Project X.

Bombing campaigns continued through the Korean War. In the years following, the base became a training facility, then transformed into a fighter base in time for the Cold War. Although MacDill was nearly slated for closure in the early 1960s, the Cuban Missile Crisis highlighted its strategic location and the U.S. Strike Command was soon established as a crisis response force. The command drew equipment and manpower from all branches of the Armed Forces.

MacDill AFB was named in honor of Colonel Leslie MacDill, a World War I pilot killed when his North American BC-1 crashed at Bolling Field in November of 1938. Colonel MacDill had been one of the first military pilots in US service, and was commander of an aerial gunnery school in St Jean de Monte, France during World War I.

Weather in the MacDill-Tampa area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and 90s, with strong humidity, and mild in the winter with the temperatures in the 60s. Annual rainfall in the area is 44 inches.
