Joint Base Andrews promotes Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Department of Defense will be promoting sexual assault community events and activities through the entire month according to the Aerotech News. The goal of the training and awareness events is to make sure that every individual gets 100 percent consent before participating in any sexual act. Michelle Williams, Andrews Sexual Assault Coordinator noted, “Through SAAM events and the newly-established Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program we hope to encourage every Andrews member to understand their responsibility of gaining consent before engaging in sexual acts.” The other goal will be to provide resource awareness to those individuals who have been victims of sexual assault. Williams added, “People need to be aware that sexual assault, of any type, is a crime. However, if someone has been victimized, there are options in place for them through SAPR and the Andrews SARC to receive help.”
Two types of reporting procedures have been established for those who want to report a sexual assault. The first is known as a restricted reporting procedure and applies to those military personnel who are active duty, Coast or National Guard or reservist military members who are performing federal training under a Title 10 status. With this type of reporting, the victim will receive medical care, and counseling without having to notify the law enforcement officials or the individual’s command. The second type of reporting is the unrestricted reporting procedures which give the sexual assault victim the same medical and psychological care but notice will be elevated through the chain of command to security and the Air Force Office of Investigation. Williams noted, “Our Airmen need to understand that there are support systems in place if they have been a victim of sexual assault. Additionally, they need to understand the difference between the two reporting procedures.” For a complete list of the events that will be held, check out the Joint Base Andrews Facebook page.
