Welcome to U.S. Naval Academy

The U.S. Naval Academy is the second oldest service academy in the country. It provides a four year federal education to a select percentage of applicants who, upon graduation, are top quality midshipmen ready for a career in the Navy. The Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Naval School was established by the Secretary of the Navy in 1845. In those days, the school was a 5 year institution with 3 of those years spent on a ship at sea. Now, midshipmen only go to sea during the summer season and spend the rest of their 4 years studying to earn their Bachelor of Science degree. Like many of the military academies, applicants to the school must be appointed by a Congressman and be well-rounded students. As of 1959, midshipmen may choose to cross-commission in any other branch of the service after graduation. Female midshipmen were allowed to apply in 1976 and make up nearly 15% of each graduating class.

This area of coastal, southeastern Maryland has a climate much like the rest of the state; summers are muggy and warm, with temperatures in the 60-80 degree range, and winters that are cold with temps in the 20s to 40s. Little snow accumulates unless a large storm rolls through and tornadoes are rare but have been known to happen; be prepared just in case.

The academy is about an hour and a half due east of Washington D.C. on a thickly settled peninsula on Marylandís coast. Nearby communities within a short commute to the school include Cape St. Clair, Severna Park, Arnold, Crownsville, and Edgewater. Home prices here can vary depending on the home type, but for the most part houses for sale are on par with the Maryland state average. This area of the state is quite historic and new residents should be able to find plenty of information and things to see dating back to the European settlers of the early 1600s.
