Welcome to NS Pearl Harbor
Naval Station Pearl Harbor is a deep-water base located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, in the city of Honolulu. It is the Naval half of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam along with Hickam AFB. NS Pearl Harbor is the home of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and other major tenant commands such as NAVFAC Pacific, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.
The base is the site of the historic attack by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941, that caused the United States to enter World War II. That is a crucial piece of the Naval Station’s history, but it does not start there. Originally, the station shared Ford Island with Army Air Corps’ Luke Field, but by the early 1930s, both facilities had outgrown the island and moved to the mainland near Honolulu. It was at this time that Luke Field became Hickam Field, Hawaii’s main airfield.
Thankfully, Pearl Harbor itself had been dredged and made deeper to accommodate more ships (thanks in part to the establishment of the shipyard in 1908,) or else the Navy never could have expanded as it has on Oahu Island.
The climate in Hawaii is tropical and hardly changes more than 5 degrees from season to season; the average temperature is 75-80 degrees, year-round. Winter months see the most of the 17 inches of annual precipitation fall as light showers. Storms are very rare.
Local housing options are available nearby in cities such as Waipahu, Pearl City, Aiea, and Honolulu. Housing in Hawaii can be expensive; apartments rent for $1,800 to $2,500 and houses sell for a rough average of $550,000.
