Welcome to NS Norfolk
Naval Station Norfolk is located in Norfolk, Virginia, one of the centers of Navy activity. It supports 75 ships and 134 aircraft with 14 piers and 11 aircraft hangars, making it the largest Naval complex in the entire world. The station supports Naval forces in the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea.
The land for the naval site was purchased in 1917 and over $1 million was set aside for development of piers, aviation facilities, storehouses, fuel storage, and recreation grounds for fleet personnel. By 1918, there were 3,400 enlisted men at the base. By 1939, large battleships had converged on the station, including the USS California, USS Idaho and USS New Mexico. Aircraft carriers such as the USS Ranger, and the USS Enterprise also called the station home.
World War II brought exponential growth to the station, which employed over 8,000 personnel at the time. The station was host to more than 70 tenant commands including several aircraft carrier groups and Navy Air Reserve units. These ships protected the shipping on the East Coast and escorted Allied supply ships to the United Kingdom as protection against German submarines. After the war, the station became primarily an air station for various squadrons. After the end of the Cold War, however, Naval Air Station Norfolk merged with Naval Station Norfolk and shifted back to its roots as a sea-based installation.
Weather in the Norfolk area tends to be warm and humid in the summer with temperatures in the 70s and 80s and cold in the winter with the temperatures in the 40s. Annual rainfall in the area is 52 inches.
