The Naval Postgraduate School is a United States Navy accredited research university which grants both master’s degrees and doctoral degrees. The student population is active-duty officers from all branches of the U.S. Military. Army officers also study at the Naval Postgraduate School as they do not have a similar training facility. Air Force candidates also study meteorology at the Naval Postgraduate School. The Naval Postgraduate School offers four graduate schools and 12 departments of study. The school is located near Monterey, California which has an economy based largely in education, health care, and tourism. Several top employers include the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, McGraw-Hill, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The school district offers four public elementary schools, one public middle school, and one public high school. Colleges and universities in the city include the Defense Language Institute, the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and Monterey Peninsula College.
For those arriving in the area by plane, the nearest major airport is the Monterey Peninsula Airport which is located about 3 miles from the downtown area. If arriving by car, the main highways are Interstate 68 which connects with Interstate 1 and brings visitors into the vicinity of the school. Monterey is located on the coastline, so tourists are drawn to the area. Some sightseeing activities include Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Monterey County Youth Museum. Many recreational facilities are also offered on several local beaches.
