Welcome to NAS Whidbey Island

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is located in Oak Harbor, Washington, about 2 hours north-northeast of Seattle.

It was established as an active Navy base in 1942. The base field is Ault Field, named after Commander William B. Ault, who was listed as “missing in action” during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Most of the operations flown from NAS Whidbey Island were patrols, guarding the northwest US from expected Japanese attack.

NAS Whidbey Island supports aircraft such as the MH-60S Seahawk helicopter, the EA-18G Growler, the EA-6B Prowler, and the C-9 Skytrain. The Seaplane Base is the other section of the air station, and includes the station’s main Navy Exchange and DeCa Commissary along with the majority of the base housing. Over 50 tenant commands occupy the NAS Whidbey Island including the VAQ-129 Vikings, the VAQ-130 Zappers, the VAQ-131 Lancers, and the VAQ-132 Scorpions. Support services such as the Marine Aviation Support Group and assorted medical, dental, and other support services reside at the base. The base also maintains a Search and Rescue Unit that flies two Sikorsky MH-60S Nighthawks; the team provides 24 day and night rescue support for Department of Defense personnel. The facility is also a center of activity for Naval Air Reserve operations and training in the region.
