Welcome to NAS Whidbey Island, WA

Housing, Business, Community, and Relocation Information.

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is located in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, one of the many islands off the west coast of Washington state. The air station is home to all EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler tactical electronic attack squadrons in the Navy. Tenants include the Electronic Attack Wing, Aviation Survival Training Center, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Det. NW.

NAS Whidbey Island and accompanying Ault Field were commissioned in 1942 and ‘43, respectively, thanks to their location being best suited for defense of the Pacific Northwest coast and convenient support of activity in Alaska. The base was instrumental during World War II; bomber and seaplane training and patrols were almost non-stop. It was expected that Whidbey Island would be closed post-war, like many other bases at the time, but it ended up the only active station in the PNW since NS Seattle could not be expanded.

The heavy attack squadrons arrived on Whidbey Island for the Korean War and soon outnumbered the patrol squadrons; by 1970, however, the heavy attackers would be redesignated tactical electronic warfare squadrons, a mission which remains today.

The base also maintains a Search and Rescue Unit equipped with Sikorsky MH-60S Nighthawks; the team provides day and night rescue support for the DoD and Pacific Northwest area. The facility is also a center of activity for Naval Air Reserve operations and training in the region.

Weather on Whidbey Island is often cool in the summer with temperatures in the 60s and 70s and cold in the winter with the temperatures in the 40s. Annual rainfall in the area is 20-30 inches; the northern and southern tips of the island receive much more precipitation than the central region does.
