Welcome to NAS Jacksonville

Naval Air Station Jacksonville is a military airport located just south of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1940, the base was officially commissioned and became part of the Jacksonville Navy Complex that would come to include the NAS Cecil Field and the Naval Station Mayport. During World War II, there were more than 10,000 pilots and 11,000 aircrewmen earned their gold wings at the station. Three runways over 6,000 feet long were operated as sea ramps, and an overhaul and repair facility was built to work on the planes located at the station. By the 1940s, the first jet carrier air squadrons had come to Jacksonville. Today, 23,000 active-duty personnel and civilians are employed at the base. The Naval Air Station Jacksonville is considered to be a hub for naval activity in the southern United States. By the mid-1950s, the station built an air traffic control center to be used by the Navy, Air Force, and Civil Aeronautics. By 1973, the stationís main mission was antisubmarine warfare. By then, the baseís popularity had made it the most requested duty station by sailors in the Navy.
