Welcome to NAS Jacksonville, FL
Naval Air Station Jacksonville is located just south of Jacksonville, Florida, and is known for its anti-submarine and pilot training. It is home to the Patrol Squadron Thirty, Helicopter Sea Combat Wing, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 11, and the Naval Entomology Center of Excellence.
Before the base was NAS Jacksonville, often shortened to Jax, the Florida National Guard used the land for several years starting in the early 1900s. In 1917, the U.S. Army took over and named it Camp Johnston. After World War I, the National Guard regained control and Johnston became Camp Foster. The Navy arrived in 1940, destined to use the former camp for important pilot training, a mission that continues today.
At the time, the facility included NS Mayport and the now-closed NAS Cecil Field. The expansion and growth, along with over 20,000 pilots and crewmen trained, dramatically improved the U.S.’s entrance into World War II. NAS Jax was present throughout every major conflict after that, including the Naval blockade at Guantanamo Bay.
Weather in the Jacksonville area tends to be hot and very humid in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and 90s and cool in the winter with the temperatures in the 50s. Annual rainfall in the area is 48 inches.
Jacksonville is a very large city, one of the largest in both population and land area in the U.S. Housing options are available in Jacksonville and nearby cities such as Middleburg, Orange Park, Lakeside, St Johns, Ponte Vedra Beach, and Bryceville.
