Welcome to MCRD Parris Island, SC
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is the primary destination for enlisted recruits on the East Coast. The major tenants are the Recruit Training Regiment and the Weapons and Field Training Battalion. The MCRD is located in Port Royal, South Carolina.
In 1861, the Port Royal Harbor was the site of a Naval storehouse and coaling dock. Parris Island was soon chosen as a site for the official Naval Station and the first Marine guard arrived in 1891. By 1895, the station became a Marine Barracks and Marine officers’ school. The barracks have been used for training since and have turned out hundreds of thousands of Marines for every major conflict of the past two centuries.
In February of 1949, the MCRD activated a separate command for training female recruits. The command was designated the 4th Recruit Training Battalion and now serves as the only battalion in the Corps for training female recruits. Today, the Marines train about 17,000 recruits a year at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.
Weather in the Parris Island area tends to be hot and humid in the summer with temperatures in the 70s to 90s, and cold in the winter with temperatures in the 30s to 60s. Annual rainfall in the area is 49 inches.
