Welcome to JEB Little Creek-Fort Story
Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story is an amphibious forces and maneuvers training joint base located near Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was created from the 2005 BRAC initiative which joined Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek with the Army's Fort Story. The 11th Transportation Battalion, several Assault Craft Units, and Seal Team units are stationed here.
Fort Story was established in 1914 as its own installation but during the second World War became a sub-installation of nearby Fort Eustis. Fort Story supported Eustis' Transportation Corps and aided in the defense of the Chesapeake Bay. It was here that amphibious assault training got its start which of course helped dramatically in the many beach landings of the war. During wartime, there were 4 installations on site working in conjunction with Fort Story; Camp Shelton, Camp Bradford, Naval Amphibious Base, and Frontier Base. These were deactivated at the war's end, but in 1946 were brought back as a united installation known as NAB Little Creek.
This coastal area of southern Virginia has a humid subtropical climate. Summer temperatures are usually in the 70 to 80 degree (F) range and can be, naturally, quite humid. Winters are usually moderate and only suffers rare days with temperatures lower than freezing; most days are in the high 30s to 50s. The Hampton Roads area, especially Virginia Beach, is well known for its beaches and can be a busy tourist destination in the warmer months.
Hampton Roads is made up of the cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, and Hampton, all within a 40 minute commute of the joint base. These well populated cities are full of military installations and housing opportunities; off post housing is easy to find and, on average, very reasonably priced compared to the state average. Little Creek-Fort Story is about 3 hours south of Washington D.C. and 1 hour 40 minutes south of Richmond, Virginia.
