Welcome to JB San Antonio
Joint Base San Antonio is the combination of 3 installations; Fort Sam Houston, and Lackland and Randolph Air Force Bases. It is the headquarters of the Air Education and Training Command and home to the 502d Air Base Wing, Air Force Ground Combat Skills School, and Army Medical Department Center and School. The joint base is located in San Antonio, Texas.
Originally, a Quartermaster Depot in 1845 the site of Fort Sam Houston was moved and turned into the military post by 1890. Up to World War II, the fort was the Army's largest post in the country. Post-war Sam Houston became a training ground for military medicine and Brooke General Hospital (now Brooke Army Medical Center) and several schools were built.
Randolph Field was constructed in 1928 and named for Captain William Millican Randolph who had been part of the scouting and naming process of the field before he perished in a plane crash. By the early 1930s Randolph had become a major hub of aviation and training. The 1935 film "West Point of the Air", a nickname of Randolph Field at the time, was shot here and featured many famous movie stars of the era.
Lackland AFB was originally a part of the now-closed Kelly Field in 1941, but just one year later became its own facility known as the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center in charge of Air Force basic training once the AF separated from the Army Air Corps. Today, all 3 bases (along with Brooke Army Medical Center) work together in San Antonio.
Weather in the southern central part of Texas near San Antonio is often humid and mild. Wintertime temperatures are usually in the 40-50 degree (F) range, with no snow but occasional freezing rain or sleet. Summers are humid and in the 90s. Strong rainstorms will often deliver a good portion of the year's precipitation in one fell swoop, causing the river to overflow resulting in massive flooding.
San Antonio is one of the state and country's most populated cities and since it is so large is often referred to by the geographical location, such as the Northwest Side, North Central, and Southside. Other communities around the city include Scenic Oaks, Universal City, Harlandale, New Braunfels, Castroville, and La Vernia. There are many options for off post housing in these areas and prices are generally much lower than in the rest of Texas. Another major city, Austin, is about an hour northeast of the bases.
