Welcome to JB Langley-Eustis
Camp Eustis was built in 1918, as a supplement facility to Fort Monroe. During World War II they helped train in anti-aircraft tactics additionally, it provided an expert source in the art of transportation across many different categories. Currently, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command is located at Eustis and deals with new weapons development. Langley also started in 1918 and is consequently one of the Air Force's oldest fields still active today. The base was quite the pioneer of aviation and related fields; aerial photography, the precursor to NASA, the National Advisory Council for Aeronautics, and dirigibles all got their start here. Throughout WWII and the Cold War, Langley proved to be an important defender of the east coast.
The climate of southern coastal Virginia, is fairly agreeable and not prone to extremes. Summer temperatures, though humid usually stay around the 70-80 degree range. The area receives about 45 inches of rain, more during the summer and only about five inches of snow. Winter temperatures are in the mild range of high 30's to 50's. The more severe storms of the southern states usually miss this region.
This area of Virginia is still called by its historical name, Hampton Roads, and is generally well-populated and chock-full of military installations. Hampton, Newport News, and Poquoson are within a 10-25 minute commute. While across the James River are the much larger cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake. They are within a distance of about 40-50 minutes from base. Housing in these areas are readily available and are usually priced modestly, especially when compared to the average price's in the rest of Virginia.
