Welcome to JB Anacostia-Bolling
Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling is a consolidation of Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base, due to the Base Realignment and Closure of 2005. Nearly 50 units are stationed here, including many ceremonial ones such as the Naval Ceremonial Guard, USAF Honor Guard, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. It is located in Washington D.C.
Both Anacostia and Bolling Field opened around the same time in 1917-18 for flight research and tests by the Navy and Army Air Corps. Since then, the bases have been integral in the aviation history of our country. This is where the Spirit of St. Louis, Charles Lindbergh's plane, landed upon re-entry into the U.S., the site of the first aerial mail route, and the first location of Air Force One's predecessor, the Sacred Cow. Although Washington National Airport eventually took over the fixed-wing aircraft scene in the area, the Joint Base remains a crucial partner in the air defense of Washington D.C.
The climate of Washington D.C. is full of extremes. Summers are extremely humid and average temperatures are in the high 80s to 90s. Spring and fall can be rainy, while winter receives a small to moderate amount of snow and plenty of days with temps near freezing. Strong thunderstorms are common, although hurricanes less so.
Besides the major city of Washington D.C., which of course is its own district. JBAB is close to the Virginia cities of Alexandria, Arlington, Annandale, and McLean, and the Maryland cities of Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Hyattsville. Many people choose to live in one of the suburbs and drive into the city; most commutes are 20-30 minutes, though the traffic of D.C. can be serious. Home prices in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metro Area are slightly higher than the Virginia and Maryland state averages, but certain communities are more affordable than others.
