Welcome to Schofield Barracks
Schofield Barracks is the headquarters of the U.S. Army Hawaii and provides year-round training facilities for nearly 100,000 Soldiers, all while defending the island of O’ahu and Pearl Harbor. It is located near Honolulu, Hawaii, and is the home of major tenant units such as the 25th Infantry Division “Tropic Lightning” and the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.
Established in 1908 to defend Pearl Harbor, the garrison became the 25 Infantry Division’s home base during World War II. In the lead up to U.S. involvement in the war, Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield (now part of the Barracks) were hit heavily and could only manage to deploy a few pilots in the aftermath as a counter-attack. The barracks are named for Lieutenant General John M. Schofield, Commanding General of the Army from 1888-1895. Currently, Schofield Barracks is Hawaii’s largest Army post at over 17,000 acres.
The ideal weather in Hawaii makes it a perfect place for year-round training (among many other recreational activities, too, of course.) Tropical temperatures here range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s all year round. The area receives less than 3 inches of rain in very light rain showers; actual storms or hurricanes are infrequent. Volcanic activity mostly occurs on the other islands; O’ahu is sunny and enjoyable more often than not.
Nearby communities within a 20 minute commute of post include Wahiawa, Waipahu, Waipio, Pearl City, and Miliani. Honolulu is about 35 minutes southeast of post. Hawaii is often more expensive than the mainland, but reasonable housing prices can be found; condos are usually less expensive than detached houses. The average home price near Honolulu is about $550,000 and rent is $2,000 per month. The culture of Hawaii is very different than that of the mainland and new residents will be able to enjoy taking it all in.
