The Red River Army Depot has over 1 million square feet of storage capacity stretched over 18,000 acres across 18 miles in Texarkana, Texas. The depot was activated in 1941 as an ammunition storage facility. In 1995, the depot was threatened with closure, but the depot has stayed open since the commission voted to keep the depot open. The depot was once again slated for closure in 2005 but the depot has been kept open to provide maintenance support for the Army. The Red River Army Depot repairs MRAPs and many different varieties of missile systems. One of the Units assigned to Red River Army Depot is the Defense Distribution Center. The depot has been designated as of high importance in its mission to support the military and its readiness program. The current population is 1,300 soldiers and civilian employees. The Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Operations Center opened at the Red River Army Depot in February of 2000. The facility has over one mile of conveyor belt, 250 cards, and 61 shipping and receiving cargo doors. The center has room for over 100 trailers.
