Welcome to Fort Stewart

Fort Stewart Is a U.S. Army post primary in Liberty County, Georgia. The current population is 11,200 people, and the fort covers 280,000 acres which makes it the largest military base on the East Coast. During World War II, the camp had billeting space for 2,700 officers and 37,000 enlisted men. Training for tanks, field artillery, helicopters and arms can be done simultaneously due to the good weather in the area. The fort is located on two deep water ports: Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina. Congress authorized the building of an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Training Center which was officially established as Camp Stewart in November 1940. With the attack on Pearl Harbor, Fort Stewart saw its first mission activation as National Guard units were deployed and more units arrived for training. Camp Stewart was one of many prisoner of war camps for the Germans and Italians in late 1942. The Korean War saw even more need for a training facility, and the war was followed up by the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Vietnam War cemented Fort Stewart as a viable Anti-Aircraft Training Facility. In 1980, the fort experienced resurgence and buildings were renovated and upgraded. The 24th Infantry Division made Fort Stewart its home.

Weather in the Fort Stewart area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and cool in the winter with the temperatures in the 50s. Annual rainfall in the area is 48 inches with the wettest month being July. July is also the warmest month, and January is the coldest.
