Welcome to Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis (Joint Base Lewis-McChord) is a joint military base of the United States Army and Air Force located in Pierce County in the state of Washington. The base merged in February 2010 and was previously Fort Lewis (Army) and McChord Air Force Base (Air Force). Originally established in 1917, the military installation became official in 1927. The Air Force Base opened in 1940 and the two bases operated separately until February 2010, a span of almost 60 years. Units stationed at the Army Base are the 2nd Brigade, the 3rd Brigade, the 17th Fires Brigade, and the 62nd Medical Brigade as well as many others. The original Fort Lewis was named after Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The fort consists of 87,000 acres and due to its pristine location in the Pacific Northwest is the most requested duty station in the Army. Nearing the end of World War II, the base became a northwest staging area and discharged its first soldiers in 1945. During the Vietnam War in 1966, Fort Lewis once again became a personnel transfer and training center. Fort Lewis has a current population of 19,000 people and covers 16 square miles of land.

Weather in the Fort Lewis area tends to be mild in the summer with temperatures in the 60s and cold in the winter with the temperatures in the 40s. Annual rainfall in the area is 38 inches with the wettest month being November. August is the warmest month, and January is the coldest. Local housing options are available nearby in cities such as Tacoma, Lacey, and DuPont.
