Welcome to Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis is a part of Joint Base Lewis-McChord and provides training and deployment-ready troops to the U.S. Army. It is located in Tacoma, Washington, and is home to several tenant units including the 7th Infantry Division and the I Corps. This is the premiere military installation in the Pacific Northwest.

The land for Camp Lewis was purchased by local citizens and given to the Army in 1917 at the start of World War I, making it the first ever military post created from donated land. The 1930s saw the fort add more units, housing, and an airfield, all of which helped greatly when the U.S. was ready to enter World War II. Many infantry and other units trained here before being be sent off to the European Theater. Besides the war, 1943-44 were important years for Fort Lewis as the Rainier Training Area (nearly 20,000 acres of land) and the Madigan Army Medical Center were both added. The fort became a part of JB Lewis-McChord in 2010.

Weather in the Puget Sound region of western Washington is very rarely extreme; summertime temps are usually in the low 60s to low 80s with a few days topping 90 degrees (F), and winters are rarely freezing. Temps average in the high 30s to 40s and mild winter days are usually accompanied by light rain for which the Seattle area is infamous.

Within a 30 minute commute of post are a wide variety of housing choices and communities; Olympia, Lacey, and Yelm are south of Fort Lewis and Spanaway, Dupont, Graham, Puyallup, Lakewood, and Steilacoom are to the north. Housing prices in these areas are generally less expensive than the state average for Washington and allow for country or more city-type living. The city of Seattle is just 45 minutes north of Fort Lewis.
