Like many posts from the early 1900s, Fort Gordon was started as a training camp for World War I soldiers. It was named after Major General John Brown Gordon, a Confederate general. During the second world war, the fort trained infantry and armored divisions and ended up as a disciplinary barracks for German and Italian POWs. After WWII, Fort Gordon gained several schools including the Military Police School, the Army’s only Criminal Investigation Laboratory, and the Civil Affairs School. Up until the 1970s, the fort was also used for basic training. Soon the focus switched to the communications and military intelligence it still specializes in today.
