Welcome to Fort Eustis

Fort Eustis is the headquarters of the Armyís Aviation Logistics School and the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). It is located in Newport News, Virginia. Major tenant units also include the 7th Sustainment Brigade and the 128th Aviation Brigade.

Camp Eustis was established as part of military build up at the beginning of World War I. Just a few years later, in 1923, the camp became a fort and the home of several artillery and infantry units. It was also used as a prison for bootleggers during the Prohibition era. For a short time after WWII, Eustis was used for coastal defense and anti-aircraft training, and later became a major supply and distribution center via every possible type of transport- ship, road, and air. Thanks to the internal railroad added in the 1950s, it was also able to ship via rail. These transportation activities are still continued today.

Weather in coastal, southern Virginia is moderate; temperatures in summertime range from the 70s to 80s and wintertime from the mid-30s to 40s. This area receives about 47 inches of rain every year and only occasional, light snow.

This part of the state is known as Hampton Roads and has its roots in early colonial America. It is now a highly populated and busy place, offering many large communities for a variety of off post housing. Cities near the fort include Newport News, Hampton, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. There are several other military installations in the Hampton Roads area as well, and on post housing fills up fast here. Home prices are generally very modest and are usually much less than other parts of Virginia.
