Welcome to Fort Bragg
Fort Bragg is the headquarters of the U.S. Army Special Forces Command, U.S. Army Airborne Forces, and the U.S. Army Reserve Command. It is located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Major units stationed here include the XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division. Pope Field, an Air Force field owned by the Army, is located on the installation.
The fort is a World War I era artillery training camp which was also used for balloon and early airplane training near the end of the war. With the advent of a second world war, Fort Bragg grew in size and in its training mission; infantry soldiers were trained here before being sent overseas and Bragg saw more than its share of “famous” airborne units including the all black 555th Parachute Infantry Brigade and the 101st Airborne Division.
This area of inland, southern North Carolina has a humid climate. Summer temperatures range from 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter gets to be about 30-50 degrees. Fayetteville receives fairly consistent rain throughout the year, with an annual average of about 45 inches.
Off post housing can be found in the large city of Fayetteville or the smaller communities of Spring Lake and Raeford which are all within a 30 minute commute. Home prices in Fayetteville are generally less expensive than those in the rest of North Carolina, about $145,000 on average. Renting an apartment or home may cost around $850 each month.
