Welcome to Fort Bliss

Fort Bliss’ size- one of the largest installations in the country, in fact- allows plenty of space to conduct live fire exercises and for the maneuverability of its many armored brigades to train. Fort Bliss is located in El Paso, Texas, and is home to several units including the 1st Armored Division, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, and the El Paso Intelligence Center HQ.

The fort has its origins in the mid-1800s when the U.S. and Mexico had strained relations and border skirmishes were frequent. Fort Bliss’ location almost directly on the border made it the perfect border post from which to defend Texas and the U.S. Over the years, relations improved and Bliss was not as necessary as it had been, so the post diminished heavily and moved locations several times before finally settling at its current site in 1893.

In the midst of all this, Fort Bliss had become home to several cavalry units, including the 9th Cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers”, the first black cavalry unit in the Army. To aid in World War II, and with the cavalry units deployed, the fort became an artillery training center, and later a missile development center during the Cold War. Today, the fort is proudly home to several armored units who continue to train and adapt to the Army’s ever-changing needs.

Since El Paso and much of the far-west of Texas is mostly desert, it may come as a surprise that the climate is warm but can be humid, unlike most dry desertlands. Thanks to monsoon season, thunderstorms mixed with the high temperatures around 90 degrees (or higher) can sometimes result in flash flooding. Winter temperatures are mild, only reaching the high 40s on average. More often than not, days are sunny throughout the year.

El Paso is one of the larger cities in the U.S., so housing options are substantial here. Fort Bliss runs over the border of Texas and into New Mexico, and nearby cities Chaparral and Anthony also offer off post housing within a 20-35 minute commute of base. Generally speaking, home prices in El Paso are quite affordable and are less expensive than Texas overall.
