Welcome to Fort Belvoir

Fort Belvoir serves as headquarters to many important Department of Defense and Department of the Army tenant organizations such as the Criminal Investigation Command and the Defense Logistics Agency. It is located in Fairfax County, Virginia.

The land around the current Fort Belvoir dates back to before the American Revolution as it belonged to wealthy English colonist Lord Thomas Fairfax. Before the war, however, Fairfax left Virginia and all that remains of that era are the ruins of his once magnificent manor. In the early 1900s, the War Department made use of the land by starting a training facility there for the lead up to World War I. The camp, known as Camp A. A. Humphreys, was home to the U.S. Army Engineer School and later the Army Gas School and School of Military Mining. After the engineering school faded out in the 1980s, the renamed Fort Belvoir was the perfect place to house major DoD units as it still does today.

Weather in the Fort Belvoir area results in humid, hot summertime temperatures in the upper 70s to mid-80s, and cool winters with temperatures around 30-45 degrees F. This area of Virginia can expect a small amount of snow, about 18 inches on average, and about 41 inches of annual precipitation.

Local housing options in this area of northern Virginia are diverse; there are many communities and cities of various sizes to choose from. Lorton, Mt. Vernon, and Newington are the closest to base, and within a 15-20 minute commute are Springfield, Alexandria, and Annandale. There is plenty to do and see in these areas, and the major city of Washington D.C. is just a half hour north of base.
