Welcome to Fort Belvoir

Fort Belvoir was once the site of the Belvoir plantation and now is a United States Army installation located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was named after the once pristine plantation home that now lies in ruins nearby. The manor house was destroyed by fire in 1783. The current population of Fort Belvoir is 7,100, and the Fort is home to many important United States military installations. Fort Belvoir serves as the headquarters to the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The Defense Contract Audit Agency, the Defense Technical Information Center, and the Defense Logistics Agency also call the Fort home. Fort Belvoir is home to 19 different agencies and direct reporting units of the Department of the Army, and 26 Department of Defense agencies. The Fort has a current population of 7,100 people and occupies 813 square miles of land.

Local weather tends to be warm in the summer with temperatures in the 70s and cold in the winter with temperatures in the 30s. Annual rainfall is 45 inches with the wettest month being May. Off-post housing options are available in nearby cities such as Mount Vernon, Alexandria, and Springfield. The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission will see the Fort experiencing a substantial increase in the number of people stationed and employed there. Fort Belvoir is located in suburban Northern Virginia and concerns have been raised regarding influxes of heavy traffic in the area. Fort Belvoir was one of 24 Army installations who were approved to build new playgrounds for special-needs children and Wounded Warriers. In August, 2010, the Fort celebrated the opening of a new playground facility that will provide a safe place for all children to enjoy.
