Welcome to Fort Belvoir
Fort Belvoir serves as headquarters to over two dozen Department of Defense and Department of the Army tenant organizations such as the Defense Logistics Agency, Defense Technical Information Center, and the Missile Defense Agency. Belvoir is also home to major Army commands, Army Reserve and Virginia National Guard units, the Military District Washington’s 12th Aviation Battalion, and Air Force and Marine Corps detachments. It is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside Washington D.C.
The land around Fort Belvoir dates back to before the American Revolution when it belonged to wealthy English colonist Lord Thomas Fairfax. Before the war, however, Fairfax left Virginia and in the early 1900s, the War Department used the abandoned land as a training facility in the lead up to World War I.
The camp, known as Camp A. A. Humphreys, was home to the U.S. Army Engineer School and later the Army Gas School and School of Military Mining. After the engineering school faded out in the 1980s, the renamed Fort Belvoir was the perfect place to house major DoD units thanks to its convenient location close to the nation’s capital.
Weather in the Fort Belvoir area results in humid, hot summertime temperatures in the upper 70s to mid-80s, and cool winters with temperatures around 30-45 degrees F. This area of Virginia can expect a small amount of snow, 18 inches on average, and about 41 inches of annual precipitation.
Local housing options in this area of northern Virginia are diverse; there are many communities and cities of various sizes to choose from. Lorton, Mt. Vernon, and Newington are the closest to base, and within a 15-20 minute commute are Springfield, Alexandria, and Annandale.
