Welcome to Brooke Army Medical
Brooke Army Medical Center is a hospital at Fort Sam Houston (part of JB San Antonio) in San Antonio, Texas. The U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School is the major unit stationed at Brooke AMC. As part of the base realignments, Brooke AMC and Wilford Hall Medical Center have joined forces and together are known as the San Antonio Military Medical Center.
The hospital started in 1879 as a small wooden building with just 12 beds. Over the next few years, the wooden structure became a small brick building, and finally expanded at the start of World War II to care for the influx of wounded soldiers. After expansion, the hospital was named for Brig. General Roger Brooke who had served as the hospital’s commander for several years in the early 1930s. Today, the Brooke AMC has 450 beds and is the MEDCOM’s only Level 1 trauma center. This teaching hospital also contains a burn unit, surgical, adult, and pediatric care, and emergency services.
The weather in the San Antonio area can be a bit bizarre since it can be both humid and dry throughout the year. Summer is usually hot and dry, typical of an arid desert region, but winter can be humid and rainy with mild temperatures. Luckily, Gulf storms usually do not reach this area of south central Texas, but sometimes flash floods can be an issue.
Housing can be easily found in the San Antonio area; the city is a large, well-populated one and BAMC and Fort Sam Houston are on the northeast side. Other communities and suburbs on this side of the city include Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Windcrest, Converse, and Universal City. Homes around San Antonio usually sell for $165,000 to $180,000; some neighborhoods are less. Rent in the metro area costs $1,200 per month.
Nearby bases: There are many military installations located in San Antonio which has, not surprisingly, led to the nickname of Military City. Other bases include Lackland AFB, Randolph AFB, and Army training camps Camp Bullis and Stanley.
