Welcome to Vandenberg AFB

Vandenburg Air Force Base is the US Air Force’s west coast spaceport, in Santa Barbara County, California.

The base was originally established in 1941 as the U.S Army’s Camp Cooke. The facility originally served as a training center for infantry troops through World War II and the Korean War. By 1957, the base was transferred to the U.S. Air Force and became a space and ballistic missile test facility, Cooke AFB. Cooke Air Force Base was renamed in 1958 in honor of General Hoyt S. Vandenburg, the second chief of staff of the Air Force and an early advocate for space and missile operations. In 1972, Vandenburg was selected as the West Coast Space Shuttle launch and landing site, but it was not been used as such.

The base covers 98,000 acres, of which 85 percent is undeveloped land. It is an excellent location for test firings of strategic missile weapons systems due to its remote location and proximity to the coast. Vandenburg is still the only military installation in the United States that launches unmanned government and commercial satellites into polar orbit.

Vandenburg is home to the 14th Air Force, the 30th Space Wing, and the 381st Training Group, as well as related squadrons and NASA offices. With the creation of the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, the base is taking on a variety of new roles.

The Space and Missile Heritage Center is located on Vandenburg and displays artifacts and memorabilia regarding the evolution of missile and spacecraft activity. The facility is open to the public.

Weather in the Vandenburg Air Force Base area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 70s and mild in the winter with the temperatures in the 50s . Annual rainfall in the area is 34 inches with the wettest month being May.
