Welcome to Vandenberg AFB
Vandenberg Air Force Base is the US Air Force’s west coast spaceport outside Lompoc, California. It is home to the host unit 30th Space Wing, Headquarters 14th Air Force, Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC Space), 381st Training Group, and the 576th Flight Test Squadron.
The base was originally established in 1941 as Camp Cooke when the Army purchased 86,000 acres of land to train infantry and armored forces for World War II. The camp was named after Maj. Gen. Philip St. George Cooke, a West Point alum and cavalry officer whose career span was long and impressive.
After the Korean War, and two brief closures, the wide open, coastal spaces of Camp Cooke were called upon as a missile launch site. In 1956, the Air Force took over control of nearly 65,000 acres for missile programs and the camp became Cooke AFB. Soon after, in 1958, the base was renamed for the Air Force’s second Chief of Staff, Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg.
Weather in the Vandenberg-Lompoc area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 70s and mild in the winter with the temperatures in the 50s. Annual rainfall in the area is 34 inches.
