Welcome to Seymour Johnson AFB
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Units stationed at here include the host 4th Fighter Wing, one of the Air Force’s most distinguished wings, and the 916th Air Refueling Wing (AF Reserves).
At the start, in 1942-3, Seymour Johnson Field was home to the headquarters of the Army Air Forces Technical School and the Provisional Overseas Replacement Training Center, designed to prepare troops for World War II. At the end of the war, the field became a processing center for reassigned troops and later acted as a separation center when the war was officially over.
Although Seymour Johnson Field closed down for nearly 10 years, it reopened in 1956 as Seymour Johnson AFB. In 1957, the 4th Fighter-Day Wing returned to the U.S. from the Korean War and took up residence as SJAFB’s host unit where it has remained since (now as the 4th Fighter Wing). The base was named for Seymour Johnson, a Navy test pilot and Goldsboro native who died in a plane crash shortly before WWII.
Weather in the Seymour Johnson-Goldsboro area tends to be warm and humid in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and cool in the winter with temperatures average in the 50s and 60s. Annual rainfall in the area is 46 inches.
