Welcome to Offutt AFB

Offutt Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation which is located near Omaha, Nebraska. The base officially began in September 1918 during World War I as an Army Air Service balloon field. It was named in honor of 1st Lieutenant Jarvis Offutt who was a World War I pilot and Omaha native. The plant consisted of six large hangars, a two mile-long concrete runway, and a 1,700,000-square-foot aircraft-assembly building. The base has been the headquarters of the Strategic Air Command for over 40 years. The population as of 2000 was 8,900 people, and the base covers an area of 4.3 square miles.
