Nine Airmen killed in action honored at Nellis
The Fallen Defenders Legacy Project held a ceremony honoring nine airmen lost in action by displaying their pictures accompanied by heroism citations according to the Rocketeer II. The ceremony was led by Colonel Kit Lambert, 99th Security Forces Group and honored all Airmen that were lost since September 11th, 2001. The Airmen are honored by a presentation to ALS's Defender Flight which is a class named after security forces known as "defenders". Lambert noted, "As the men and women of Defender Flight go through their training, we want them to remember Airmen who laid down their lives to defend our country." The executive assistant in the 99th Security Forces Group, Senior Airman Vanessa Reaves added, "I didn't realize how close I was going to get to it. It was awesome to be able to honor these guys."
The Airmen honored were as follows: Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson killed on September 28, 2005 in the War on Terror; Staff Sgt. Brian McElroy and Tech Sgt. Jason Norton were killed on January 22, 2006 on patrol near Bagdad, Airman 1st Class Leebernard Chavis was killed on October 14, 2006 by enemy fire in Iraq, and Staff Sgt. John Self was killed while assisting Iraqis in Bagdad on May 14th, 2007. Others lost included Airman 1st Class Jason Nathan who was killed June 23, 2007 in Iraq; Staff Sgt. Travis Griffin who was killed on his fourth tour to Baghdad on April 3rd, 2008; 1st Lt Joseph Helton who was killed on September 8th, 2009 in Baghdad; and Senior Airman Nicholas Alden was killed in a shooting in Germany on March 2nd, 2011. Lambert noted, "This gives the families a sense of peace because they know that their fallen family member is not forgotten. They are a permanent part of our Air Force and that we constantly reflect on the sacrifice they have given."
