Welcome to MacDill AFB

MacDill Air Force Base is in the Tampa, Florida area, under Air Mobility Command, with the 6th Air Mobility Wing hosting.

The base was established in 1939 as the Southeast Air Base, Tampa. It was renamed in honor of Colonel Leslie MacDill, a World War I pilot killed when his North American BC-1 crashed at Bolling Field in November of 1938. Colonel MacDill had been one of the first military pilots in US service, and was commander of an aerial gunnery school in St Jean de Monte, France during World War I.

In World War II, the 21st Bombardment Group flew antisubmarine missions from MacDill. By the fall of 1942, the 21st had succeeded in driving off the German U-boat packs that had been taking a heavy toll on shipping in the western Atlantic Ocean. MacDill was also a shooting site for two war movies (A Guy Called Joe and Air Force), as the Tampa area was as close to tropical as possible for the US and could stand in for South Pacific islands.

Although MacDill looked to be slated for closure in the early 1960s, the Cuban Missile Crisis highlighted its strategic location, and the United States Strike Command was soon established at MacDill as a crisis response force. The command drew equipment and manpower from all branches of the Armed Forces. The base has remained open since, although in the 1990s the flightline was almost shut down.

The host unit at the MacDill Air Force Base is the 6th Air Mobility Wing, which provides mission support to more than 3,000 military personnel. Other units located at MacDill include the 927th Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command.

Weather in the MacDill Air Force Base area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and 90s, with strong humidity, and mild in the winter with the temperatures in the 60s. Annual rainfall in the area is 44 inches with the wettest month being August.

Local housing options are available nearby in cities such as Tampa and St. Petersburg. Tampa rents for apartments are about $700 to $950. Houses nearby are about $180,000.
