Welcome to MacDill AFB

MacDill Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located about 4 miles from Tampa, Florida. The base was established in 1939 as the Southeast Air Base, Tampa. It was named in honor of Colonel Lesley MacDill who was a World War I aviator that was killed when his North American BC-1 crashed at Anacosta D.C. in November of 1938. Colonel MacDill was commander of an aerial gunnery school in St Jean de Monte, France. The host unit at the MacDill Air Force Base is the 6th Air Mobility Wing. The wing provides mission support to more than 3,000 military personnel. Other units located at MacDill include the 927th Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command. The 6th Operations Group, Maintenance Group, Missions Group, and Medical Group are also stationed at the base. In 1941, the 44th Bombardment Group flew antisubmarine missions. By the fall of 1942, the combat aircraft had succeeded in driving off the German U-boat packs that had been taking a heavy toll on shipping in the western Atlantic Ocean. Although MacDill looked to be slated for closure soon after, the Cuban missile crisis highlighted its prime strategic location, and the United States Strike Command soon established MacDill as a crisis response force. The base drew equipment and manpower from all branches of the Armed Forces.

Weather in the MacDill Air Force Base area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and mild in the winter with the temperatures in the 60s. Annual rainfall in the area is 44 inches with the wettest month being August. August is also the warmest month, and January is the coldest. Local housing options are available nearby in cities such as Tampa and St. Petersburg. The population of MacDill is 2,692 people. In the 2005 BRAC recommendations, the 319th Air Refueling Wing’s KC-135 aircraft was distributed to MacDill. Two mobility wings would now share the same aircraft, the 6 Air Mobility Wing and the 927th Air Refueling Wing. The relocation was completed at MacDill in August 2008.
