MacDill AFB Off Base Housing

MacDill Air Force Base is the home of the 6th Air Mobility Wing. The wing operates the KC-135R Stratotanker and the C-37A Gulfstream aircraft, providing mission support for over 3,000 personnel and 50 Mission Partners. The base is capable of rapidly projecting air refueling power to anywhere in the world. MacDill Air Force Base also bases the Aircraft Operations Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which flies the WP-3D Orion and the Gulfstream IV aircraft. The base is near Tampa, Florida where the economy is based in service, finance, national defense, professional sports, and tourism. Many corporations have their headquarters in the city including WellCare Health Plans, Inc., TECO Energy, and Walter Energy. The urban development in the downtown area is producing many new home opportunities. Homes for sale range from $170k to $200k based on the bedroom/bathroom combinations. Apartments in the area start at a monthly rental rate of $700 and up. Rental homes start at $1000 a month and up depending on the amenities offered.

The Hillsborough County Public School District offers four elementary schools, two public middle schools, and one public high school. Many fast-food restaurants, banks and museums are located just under half a mile off base, offering convenient access to local neighborhoods. When traveling to the area via plane, the nearest airport is the Tampa International Airport. The next closest airport is the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport which lies just across the bay. Amtrak provides passenger rail service through the Tampa Union Station. Bus service is available through the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority. Public bus and paratransit as well as a streetcar are available through the Marion Transit Center in downtown Tampa. Major highways into the Tampa community are SR-618 (Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway) and SR-589 (Veterans Expressway) which connects the Tampa International Airport across several bridges to the main suburbs of Tampa.
