Welcome to Keesler AFB
Keesler Air Force Base is in Biloxi, Mississippi. The host unit is the 81st Training Wing, which trains personnel in the field of meteorology, weather analysis, tropical cyclone forecasting, basic electronics, airfield management, radar operations, and air traffic control. The subordinate 81st Medical Group runs one of the largest medical centers in the Air Force.
The base was first established in January of 1941 when the United States Army needed a base to support the pre-World War II training buildup. It was named after 2nd Lieutenant Samuel Reeves Keesler, Jr., a Mississippi native and an aerial gunner who was killed in France in World War I during action that earned him a Silver Star.
The base was not only an air corps training center, it was a general and basic training center. Soldiers training at Keesler included pre-aviation cadets, radio operators, bombardiers, and aviation mechanics. Perhaps the most well-known people trained at Keesler were the ground crew of the Tuskegee Airmen, several all-black units who went on to an extraordinary military record in the European Theater.
After World War II, Keesler gained a Radar School and the base then operated the two largest military technical schools in the United States. This training load was gradually transferred to other bases in the Air Force, and Keesler AFB became the primary training ground for electronic career fields; these included electronic warfare, navigational aids, computer repair, and ground radio repair.
Weather in the Keesler-Biloxi area tends to be hot in the summer with temperatures in the 80s and cool in the winter with the temperatures in the 50s. Annual rainfall in the area is 64 inches.
