Welcome to Holloman AFB
Holloman Air Force Base is located outside Alamogordo, New Mexico, near the White Sands Missile Range. Holloman Air Force Base is a prime location due to its great flying weather and suitable air space. It was named in honor of Colonel George Holloman, an early rocket pioneer and an aircraft research enthusiast.
The Holloman Air Force Base was established in 1942 as Alamogordo Air Field located just six miles west of Alamogordo, New Mexico. From 1942 to 1945, Alamogordo Air Force Base was the training ground for 20 different flying groups. After World War II, the site was used for testing guided missiles including the Rascal, the Falcon, the MGM-1, and the Matador.
In 1961 Ham and Enos, two chimpanzees trained at Holloman, were separately launched into orbit; one flew for about 16 minutes, the other for two orbits around the earth before being recovered three hours and 21 minutes later. This was part of Holloman’s contribution to the Space Race. Holloman was also a testing center for military and aerospace rockets, starting in 1948. As part of this program, Holloman has been the site of various speed tests. The base is home to the world’s longest and fastest high speed test track with 50,700 feet. The 846th Test Squadron set the world land speed record for a railed vehicle at Holloman in April 2003. As another part of this research, Holloman was the base of Capt. Joseph W. Kittinger’s record setting suborbital parachute jump, in August 1960 - a jump lasting 13 minutes, reaching terminal velocity of 614 mph.
The German Air Force Tactical Training Center existed at Holloman from 1996-2013. German aircrews came for three weeks of advanced tactical training before returning to Germany.
Weather in the Holloman area tends to be warm in the summer with temperatures in the 70s to 90s or higher, and cold in the winter with the temperatures in the 20s to 50s, but sometimes plunging to below zero. Annual rainfall in the area is 13 inches.
Local housing options are available nearby in cities such as Las Cruces, Alamogordo, and La Luz. Apartment rent nearby runs about $375 to $750. Houses nearby sell for about $101,000.
