Dover Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located just miles from the city of Dover, Delaware. The base was established in March 1941, and the facility was opened just weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was named Dover Army Airbase in 1943, but he name was changed to Dover Air Force Base in January 1948 with the establishment of the United States Air Force. Dover is home to the 436th Airlift Wing known as the “Eagle Wing” and the AMC-gained 512th Airlift Wing referred to as the “Liberty Wing”. It was the only base to solely operate the massive C-5 Galaxy. The largest military mortuary in the Department of Defense is located at Dover Air Force Base. Many fallen heroes including the Space Shuttle Challenger crews were returned here to Dover Air Force Base. Major units assigned to the base include the 45th Bombardment Group, the 98th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, and the 512th Military Airlift Wing.

Weather in the Dover Air Force Base area tends to be warm in the summer with temperatures in the 70s and very cold in the winter with the temperatures in the 30s. Annual rainfall in the area is 46 inches with the wettest month being August. July is also the warmest month, and January is the coldest. During Desert Shield, the host unit at Dover Air Force Base flew 17,000 hour and airlifted 131,000 tons of cargo in support of freeing the Kingdom of Kuwait. Following the attacks on Pearl Harbor, the base units became major players in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The two wings continue to support operations in that region.
