Welcome to Arnold AFB

Arnold Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force base located in Tullahoma, Tennessee. The base was constructed during 1941 and 1946 and is one of the largest training bases. The camp was named after American Civil War cavalryman, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The camp was originally a training area for infantry, artillery, engineering, and signal organizations. It also serves as a hospital center and temporary encampment area for troops during maneuvers. In May 1942, the camp became a Prisoner of War camp for Japanese and German POWs. The population of Tullahoma started at 4,500 and by then end of the War had ballooned to 75,000 people. During the Cold War, the Arnold Air Force Base became a jet engine test sight. The base was also used for testing aerospace designs at high speeds. The Propulsion Wind Tunnel Test Facility was built to put spacecraft to the ultimate tests.

Weather in the Arnold Air Force Base area tends to be warm in the summer with temperatures in the 70s and very cold in the winter with the temperatures in the 30s. Annual rainfall in the area is 60 inches with the wettest month being March. July is also the warmest month, and January is the coldest. Local housing options are available nearby in cities such as Manchester, Tullahoma, and Winchester. In September 2002, a $10.4 million test facility upgrade was announced and all aerodynamic and propulsion test customers will be serviced by one base. The upgrade nearly doubles the center’s current test capabilities and includes installing a new high-temperature and high-pressure burner. The center currently operates 58 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels as well as space environmental chambers, and ballistic ranges. The base is named for General Henry “Hap” Arnold who is considered the father of the U.S. Air Force.
